Joseph Mathias
Joseph Mathews Mathias Jr. was born on March 21, 1923 in Norfolk, VA. Always fascinated with airplanes, he started building models at age 10. He earned his private certificate before high school graduation in May, 1941 at the Glenrock Airport in Norfolk. In 1940, he and two friends bought a 1928 American Eagle with an OX5 engine; they restored it and only got as far as high speed taxi when World War II broke out and they were prohibited from flying near the east coast. They sold the airplane to the U.S. Navy but owning it before 1941 qualified Joe to become a Pioneer member of the OX5 Club. While waiting for call-up by the Army, Joe instructed for Woody Edmondson at the Lynchburg, VA airport in a Navy training program. After being called up for active duty, Joe attended several flight courses, including instrument training in upstate New York in the winter. When the Army decided it had enough transport pilots, Joe was given the choice of gliders or the walking Army; naturally, he chose gliders. He went through training in the Waco CG-4A at Sheppard Field and Lubbock, TX as well as Laurinburg-Maxton, NC. He was deployed to Ramsbury, England and when his unit was called, the mission was Operation Varsity crossing the Rhine River from France into Germany three days after his 22nd birthday; the payload was 13 soldiers and several anti-tank mines. They flew at 400 feet for 2 hours and 40 minutes; the two pilots alternated every 30 minutes to give each other a break. After the mission, Joe came home to Norfolk to await orders to the Pacific; fortunately for him, President Truman ordered the bomb dropped on Japan and the war ended.
In 1948 Joe and friend Sam Blumberg operated a maintenance shop at the Pungo Airport in Virginia Beach. The following year he worked for Norfolk to Cape Charles Airlines flying a Noorduyn Norseman and a Stinson V-77. Corporate jobs followed until Joe heard that the DC-3 would be phased out; he didn’t want to miss his chance to fly the DC-3 so he applied to Piedmont Airlines. He was hired in February, 1952 and flew the DC-3 for 10,000 hours; then the Fairchild F-27, Martin 404, YS-11, and finally, the Boeing 737. His most exciting emergency was being struck by lightning in 1965 over Ashland, KY; he landed the plane safely at Ashland to discover that the top 18 inches of the tail was missing! During his airline career, Joe continued to build and fly light airplanes; he joined the Experimental Aircraft Association in 1955, holding membership number 1343. Joe and friend Warren Carter built a Druine Turbulent (all wood airplane) and trailered it to Rockford, IL (predecessor to Oshkosh) for judging. It was selected the 1959 Grand Champion and was the first aircraft in the U.S. with a Volkswagen engine. His picture flying the Turbulent was on the cover of EAA’s Sport Aviation magazine. Joe rebuilt several J-3 Cubs during his lifetime and was recognized as a Cub expert and master craftsman. Joe also performed aerobatic routines in his Pitts Special and flying farmer acts in his Cub for EAA airshows. His last airshow was in 1975. He developed angina in 1976 so went out on medical retirement from Piedmont; in 1977 he and partner Al Jenkins founded Custom Antique Aeroplanes. They restored Pepsi’s skywriting Travelair 4000 and a Beech Staggerwing among others. Joe sold his part of the business in 1986 so that he could spend more time on his own aircraft.
Although he said he wasn’t a happy glider pilot in WWII, Joe maintained his interest in gliders. In 1964, he co-founded the Tidewater Soaring Society at South Norfolk Airport; in 1977, Joe negotiated with the owner of a private field and the glider club moved to Garner Airport in Isle of Wight County where it remains today. He restored a 1943 Army training glider (TG-4) and flew it in 2005; the glider is now on loan to the Millitary Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. Joe was a charter member of three EAA

Robert Morse Brown
Family-Placed Obituary
ROBERT MORSE BROWN Bob Brown, 59, of Wellington, FL, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2008, after a long, valiant fight with lung cancer. Bob's two great loves were broadcasting and aviation. He was determined to overcome his disease, with such tenacity and strength, that he managed, against all odds, to live cancer free for two years. He spent his final working months with Flight Safety, where he made many friends. Through it all, he was lovingly cared for by his wife, Linda and surrounded by his many caring friends. CAPT. JOE HIGH
It is with much sadness I notify you that Captain Joe High took his last flight west. After a long battle with lukemia, Joe passed away March 22nd. His wife Patsy was with him at his bedside as she had been during his time of sickness. Joe has a son who resides in Roanoke, VA.
Joe was born November 22, 1926 in Bailey, NC where he grew up. After his service in the military Joe attended college and went to work for Piedmont Airlines in 1949 as an agent. Joe became a Sales Representative for Piedmont and later in the mid 50's he was hired by Piedmont as a pilot. He earned his pilot wings at a small airport near Charleston. WVA.
Everyone who knew Joe had a great respect for him. He was a professional in all areas of his life, a truly honest, sincere and caring person. He made everyone around him always feel comfortable. Joe has been one of my best friends I have ever known for the past 43 years.
I have a special connection with Joe as he taught me to fly and helped me secure my job as a First Officer with Piedmont in 1967. Anyone who ever flew with Joe knows what a good pilot and teacher he was. His ability to teach was done in a way that allowed you to learn from your mistakes without feeling intimidated. He liked challenges and had an inquiring mind, always looking for ways to be better in all aspects of his life.
He had an infectious laugh that come straight from his heart when he was having fun or telling a funny story. One hot July day in my Cessna 120, he forgot his lighter and couldn't smoke his strong black Perogi cigar he liked and he laughed and said, 'Bill I guess you lucked out today'. If not for Joe and his interest in teaching me to fly, I might not have had the wonderful flying career I enjoyed with Piedmont Airlines.
Joe, we will all miss you, but your memory will forever be with us. I wish I could have been more like you throughout my life.
Your Friend,
Captain Bill Carico

Capt. Gerald Boyce
Pauline Thomas forwarded your e-mail to me requesting some in formation on my late husband, Capt. Gerald (Jerry) L. Boyce. His date of birth was 6/30/51 and his date of death was 11/19/06. He was 55 years old. Jerry was killed after spending the day at the Rock Hill Airport with the RV-8 he had just built. It was a beautiful and warm day so Jerry rode his Harley Davidson down to the hangar. He called to say he was coming home and wanted to put up the Christmas tree. Jerry never came home. He also never got to fly the plane as he was waiting for a replacement/warranty part. Jerry was hit by a car driven by a 72 year old lady. She was charged with failure to yield right of way. Surviving him is his mother, Betty Boyce of Lugoff, SC and his brother, Ronnie Boyce also of Lugoff, SC. I am his wife, Anna M. Boyce, who is also a flight attendant. I have been on a medical leave of absence for several years, but was hired with Piedmont Airlines on 4/30/85. Later US Air adjusted my hired date to 3/25/85.
Jerry was hired with Piedmont Airlines on 3/4/85. When I married him, I gained a whole three weeks of travel senority! We laughed about that.
On Jerry's birthday, June 30th of this year, we did a memorial service, "Missing Man" formation in honor of Jerry and for everyone to see the magnificent airplane that he had worked so hard on a built from scratch. Capt. Gene Thomas flew Jerry's plane in the formation and he flew west.
Please add Jerry's name to the "Gone West" plaque.
If there is any more information that I can send to you, please feel free to e-mail back to me or call.

Capt. Larry Daniel Dudley, Jr.
Captain Larry Daniel Dudley Jr.
Larry Daniel Dudley, Jr., 64, of Roanoke, Va., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, November 8, 2007. A faithful man of God, Larry passed away just as he lived his life-as a witness to God's faithfulness, surrounded by his family, and even in his final moments, filled with God-given love. Larry's father, Larry Dudley, Sr., was undoubtedly awaiting his son's arrival in Heaven. Larry's legacy here on Earth will be carried on by his many family members and friends, including his sweetheart and the love of his life, his wonderful wife of 38 years, Linda Edmonds Dudley; and the four children that the two of them so lovingly raised together, Larry Daniel Dudley, III, Kathryn Dudley Aldridge and her loving husband, John, and their three children, Jackson, Abigail, and Amelia; James Robert Dudley, and Michael Patrick Dudley. Also surviving are Larry's mother, Evelyn Dudley; and his loving and gentle brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Cathy Dudley and their children, Amy, Sara, and Matthew; Mary Leeann Clemons, girlfriend to James; and Laura Katherine Higgins, girlfriend to Michael, also join the family in celebrating Larry's life.
Larry was a lifelong aviation and history fan, and one of the best pilots you would ever meet. He truly enjoyed telling tall tales with his aviation buddies who shared so many weekends at the Buzzard's Roost and the Quiet Birdmen gatherings. But to those who knew him best, Larry was a man who loved his Lord, his family, and his friends. Nothing made him happier than when all of his "chickens" would come home for holidays to be together as a whole family. His sweet, sweet heart and wise words will be missed by all, though we hold on to the knowledge that we will see him again one day, without pain or frustration, but in perfect love.
Friends and family are welcome to join us in a visitation at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue on Saturday, November 10, 2007 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. On Sunday, November 11, 2007, a graveside service will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens on Airport Road, Roanoke at 2 p.m. A memorial and worship service honoring Larry's life and his faith will be held at Cave Spring Baptist Church on Brambleton Road at 3:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who want to help join us in supporting Roanoke County Fire and Rescue #5 and the Blue Ridge Women's Center.
